If you have ever taken on a challenge of transformation you know exactly how disappointing motivation can be and how elusive discipline is. Everything is easy with motivation but as soon as it runs out the simplest of tasks requires discipline.  Motivation is based on "want to" and when the going gets tough we stop wanting to do the work. That's when we begin to develop discipline to take action on want to, have to, and need to. It's easy to do what we like, hard to do what we dislike, and a struggle to do what we must. Hiring a coach can make a big difference.

Let's look at a simple example. After last year, most of us need to lose a few pounds (I know I do). We want the pounds to come off as easily as we change the channel on the television or eat another slice of pizza. We know we have to deprive ourselves and exert ourselves in strenuous physical activity. We might even have to change something we don't want to like our schedule, attitude, or viewpoint. To the degree that we can master these forces we can reach our goal and change ourselves in the process.

Do It Yourself

I have personally battled a mindset for getting things done for years.  I call it the "do it yourself" mentality. It causes me to work only as quickly as I can do the work myself.  It is reinforced by thinking, "I have more time than money."  In the real world this means that whenever something breaks I feel an urge to fix it myself.  With no experience, training, or help I have changed the engine in a car, remodeled a bathroom, finished a basement, built several websites, reupholstered a boat, cut down trees and a lot more before I learned my lesson. These projects did not turn out the way I hoped. They took twice as long, cost twice as much, and looked half as good as I wanted.  I paid a high price and sometimes so did my family.

The cost of "do it yourself" for a substance abuse problem, marriage difficulties, or personal leadership issues can be very high.  A coach helps you do the work properly and efficiently while supporting your efforts. This saves time, energy, heartache, and accelerates the achievements you really want in your life. Whether you have a coach or not you still get the credit for the accomplishment. The coach doesn't do the work for you, they help you get the work done more efficiently, with fewer problems, and in a way that fits just right for you.

Of all the things successful people do to become successful, participating in some kind of coaching program is at the top of the list. Most people who get counseling or coaching say they wish they had sought help years earlier. Even people who get divorced, report that several years after divorce they are able to see how counseling could have saved their marriage if they had only tried it sooner. So don't figure it out with the "do it yourself" approach; it will cost you twice as much, take twice as long, and be half of what you expect.

At Emerging Strength we offer tailor made solutions for you. We have flexible scheduling so it fits into daily life. It's up to you how often we meet and whether we meet online or in real life (IRL). I do three things really well: helping people win the fight of their lives, helping marriages touched by addiction, and helping people find their strength even when they don't feel strong.

Is it time to build a life you love?
